Sainsbury’s Meatfree Hot Dog Sausages

Sometimes I’m in the mood for a simple hot dog. This is a food from my childhood which brings back happy memories: Hot dogs on the barbecue, hot dogs in squishy buns at a baseball game, hot dogs sliced and added to baked beans with gooey melted cheese on top… As a pescetarian it’s not as easy as it used to be to have hot dogs. Until now!!
Sainsbury’s Meatfree Hot Dog Sausages are fantastic! They are found in the frozen food aisle, and cost only £1.85 for 10 hot dogs. They are made from a blend of soya and wheat proteins, and yet manage to have the right consistency without all the icky stuff found in regular hot dogs (I don’t even want to go there). They aren’t the healthiest meat substitute on the block, but they’re not bad either (think orange on the stop-light chart), and whoever thought hot dogs were a health food anyway?!
This past 4th of July I thought it was appropriate to have an American themed meal. I made hot dogs smothered in fried onions and cheese, and covered with French’s Yellow Mustard and Heinz Ketchup. I served this with a salad and some baked beans. It was a very yummy, comforting, home-y meal. I always keep a box of these in my freezer.

I really LOVE these, they taste NOM, and I would like to have some for tea tonight. Alas my local Sainsburys has stopped selling them!
It’s not just your local Sainsburys, I think it’s everywhere, which is so sad. I love these too! I really hope they bring them back.
I had the following twitter exchange with Sainsburys:

.@sainsburys Do you plan to bring back the Sainsburys Meatfree Hot Dogs? I haven’t been able to find them in store for a while. Love them!

@AlissaJRobinson Hi. I’m afraid we aren’t able to stock these at the minute. However, we’re working hard to get them back in the new year.
Fingers crossed for the new year!
